What is sexual wellbeing?
In Scotland, our ambition is for everyone to be empowered to maintain positive sexual health, wellbeing and function.
Sexual wellbeing is not the same as good sexual health. Sexual wellbeing includes feeling respected, comfortable, confident, autonomous, secure, and able to enjoy safe, healthy, respectful, consensual and pleasurable relationships and sexual interactions.
Sexuality is part of sexual wellbeing and is not just about sexual preferences and whether you are heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Your sexuality is unique to you. Sexuality involves:
- Sex and sexual practice
- Self image
- Your personal history
- Social relationships
- Sensuality
- Emotions
- Spirituality
- Political identity
- Cultural identity
- Religious beliefs
Sexual wellbeing is wider than the provision of clinical services and this section explores many topics in this area but if you are looking for information on specialist clinical services or need to make an appointment at the sexual health service, please visit their website
